The UK government has taken action to limit water usage in new dwellings through compulsory requirements and set ambitious targets to reduce household water use from 150 litres per person per day to an average of 130 litres for 2030. Quantifying household water consumption and conservation in the UK has important implications for the management and provisioning of water sources during drought.
We are launching an online community water survey across seven of our case study catchments (areas linked by a common water resource) in England, Wales and Scotland. We aim to collect data on household water use and demand as well as water-saving behaviour and perceptions of future water management risk.
The data from the questionnaire will be used to quantify the reduction in water use for different water efficiency measures and household water use and demand for each of our catchment areas. Household water-saving behaviour and perceptions of water management risk provide a foundation for predicting water consumer behaviours during a drought. This approach will also provide decision utilities to assist policy makers and stakeholders in the development of drought adaptation and mitigation strategies.
